The calendar

Public holidays and festivals in Suriname

The Surinamese holiday calendar is the shortest summary of Surinamese history that exists. It carries Afro-Surinamese, Hindustani, Javanese, Chinese, Christian and Islamic days, and all of them are national holidays, for everyone, not only the community they came from.

It matters for planning: on public holidays there is a lot to see but shops and offices close, and around 25 November and Keti Koti the city is full and flights are expensive.

Holidays that follow a lunar calendar. Holi Phagwa, Divali, Chinese New Year and the Islamic days, move each year. We therefore give a window rather than a date; check the exact day for your travel year.
