Brownsberg Nature Park: 500 metres above the reservoir
Brownsberg Nature Park sits on a plateau of about 500 metres on the western edge of the Brokopondo reservoir, 130 kilometres south of Paramaribo, and is one of the best places in Suriname for howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys and toucans.

The park is managed by STINASU and lies about 130 kilometres from Paramaribo, the last stretch climbing an unpaved road. An ordinary car does not always make it in the rainy season.
From the plateau you look out over the reservoir with the dead trunks standing in it. Trails run from there to the waterfalls, among them Leo Val and Irene Val, with significant descent and climb.
Simple STINASU lodges and cabins allow you to stay overnight. Anyone serious about wildlife should: around sunrise the park is incomparably more active than at midday.
Frequently asked questions
How high is Brownsberg?
The Brownsberg plateau lies at roughly 500 metres above sea level, on the western side of the Brokopondo reservoir. It is noticeably cooler up there than in Paramaribo.
What animals can you see at Brownsberg?
Red howler monkeys (almost always audible), squirrel monkeys, brown capuchins, toucans, several parrot species, and with luck an armadillo or anteater. Between 06:00 and 09:00 gives by far the best odds, and the 500-metre plateau is still cool then.
