The neighbourhood owes its character to Javanese indentured labourers who settled there after their contracts ended. What began as small home kitchens grew into a street of dozens of warungs.
By day it is an ordinary residential area with little to see. After dark the lights go on and it fills with Surinamese families eating out, not with tourists.
Get there by taxi or minibus; it is too far to walk from the centre. Bring cash, because almost no warung takes cards.
