Money in Suriname: SRD, cash and cards
The currency of Suriname is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). In practice cash is the norm: markets, warungs, taxis and small shops take cash almost exclusively. Bring euros or US dollars to exchange locally.
Check this This changes. Verify it before you travel with your own bank and a current exchange rate, we keep this page current, but a page is no substitute for the source itself.
The SRD has fallen sharply in value in recent years, so prices in Suriname move quickly. Figures you find online are often out of date, including on this site. Treat every SRD price here as indicative, not as a tariff.
Cards work in hotels, larger supermarkets and some restaurants, but not at the market, not in warungs and not in taxis. Assume cash and treat cards as the exception.
Exchange money at an official exchange office (cambio) or a bank, never on the street. Euros and US dollars are both easy to change; bring clean, undamaged notes, because torn ones get refused.
With us you pay a deposit in advance to reserve and the balance on the day in cash, in SRD, euros or US dollars.
In short
- Cash in euros or USD to exchange, clean notes
- Small SRD notes for markets and taxis
- A second bank card kept separately
- Do not rely on cards outside hotels and supermarkets
