Internet, SIM cards and calling in Suriname
Suriname has two mobile operators, Telesur and Digicel. A local prepaid SIM or eSIM is by far the cheapest option, because Suriname is not covered by EU roaming and standard roaming charges are high. WhatsApp is the normal business communication channel here.
Worth knowing: Suriname is not covered by EU roaming rules. Your European bundle does not apply and roaming can add up fast. Turn data roaming off before you land.
Buy a local prepaid SIM from Telesur or Digicel, in the city or at the airport. Bring your passport; registration is standard. More phones now support eSIM, which makes this easier.
Wifi exists in hotels and many restaurants, but speeds vary a lot. Do not count on coverage in the interior, on the Upper Suriname River and at Brownsberg it ranges from limited to absent.
WhatsApp is the default channel for business contact in Suriname. Companies, taxi firms and guides, including us, answer fastest there.
In short
- Turn off data roaming before you land
- Bring your passport to register a SIM
- Check whether your phone supports eSIM
- Expect little or no coverage in the interior
