Paramaribo Food Tour
Six kitchens inside three kilometres, from the fish hall to saoto in Blauwgrond.
For three generations at once, or a village on the Upper Suriname.
Some trips do not fit into a day: the village upriver your family came from, the leatherback turtles that come ashore at Galibi between April and July, or three generations travelling together with a grandfather who will not walk in the heat. You get a proposal within three working days with one fixed total, and if something is not possible we say so before you pay anything.
Family trips are the most requested. Grandparents who want to see it once more, parents who want to show their children, grandchildren who mostly want wifi. That needs a programme where not everyone has to do everything, and transport that does not assume walking in thirty-degree heat.
The Upper Suriname River is where the Saramaccan and Aucan Maroon villages lie. You travel by dugout canoe and sleep in a lodge or with a family in the village; that is three to five days. Galibi, in the far northeast on the Marowijne, is where leatherback and green turtles come ashore to nest between roughly February and August.
You get a proposal with one fixed total, transport, accommodation, food, guide and entries, rather than a day rate that grows along the way. If something is not possible, we say so before you pay.
Times are indicative. Weather, traffic and how long you want to stay somewhere decide the rest.
Families, groups of four or more, and anyone with a specific reason to go to a specific place.
Not suitable if you want to leave tomorrow. Allow at least two weeks of preparation for the interior, and a month for Galibi in turtle season.
Multi-day trips to the Upper Suriname River or Galibi generally start around €150 per person per day including transport, accommodation, food and guide. The exact figure depends on destination, season and group size; you get one fixed total in advance.
The nesting season at Galibi runs roughly February to August, with most leatherbacks between April and July. Hatchlings are mainly seen from June to September. Galibi sits on the Marowijne in the far northeast, a full day’s travel from Paramaribo.
Allow at least two weeks for the interior, and longer around the European summer holidays, Christmas and 25 November (Independence Day). For Galibi in turtle season we advise a month.
