The plantations sit on the water, because the water was the road.
Commewijne boat tour: along the river past the old plantation banks
The Commewijne River is the reason the plantations sit where they do: the river was the road and the banks were the address. From the water you see Fort Nieuw Amsterdam at the fork, the landings at Frederiksdorp and the creeks at Rust en Werk. New departure dates are being arranged. Request your date and we will check available shared or private departures; the price is confirmed when availability is checked.
Status: Switi Tours organises this experience on request. Availability, timing and final arrangements are confirmed with you before booking.
Fort Nieuw Amsterdam stands at the fork of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers and is now an open-air museum. From there the Commewijne runs east past the old coffee, cacao and sugar plantations: Frederiksdorp, which housed the district administration until 1907, Rust en Werk with its creeks, and across the water Marienburg, the sugar plantation where indentured workers from British India and Java later worked.
What makes a boat different from a drive here is the arrival. These houses, landings and factories were built to be approached from the water, not from a car park. You see the side the builders meant you to see.
We tell that history straight. Plantations mean slavery until abolition in 1863, and indenture after it. That is the substance of the day, not a footnote.
Local operators publicly sell this trip as a full day, leaving the jetty at Leonsberg around 09:00 and starting back in the afternoon (checked September 2026). That is their format. We publish no schedule of our own until our departure time is confirmed.
What that means for you: this is a request page, not a booking page. Send us your date and how many people you are, we check what is sailing that day, and you get a personal answer with the price and the format. If you are travelling alone we check whether there is a shared departure you can join or whether a private boat is feasible. We promise neither in advance. If you want a set day with a published price, look at our Commewijne plantation tour.

This is for you if…
People who want plantation history seen from the water, photographers after the banks and landings, and anyone who would rather sail than drive.
Do not book this if…
Not for anyone who gets seasick in an open boat, and not for anyone wanting a day without the slavery history. Allow a full day, much of it in full sun, and a programme that depends on the tide.

Frequently asked questions
What do you see on a Commewijne river boat tour?
Fort Nieuw Amsterdam at the fork of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, then the old plantation banks: Frederiksdorp, Rust en Werk and, across the water, the Marienburg sugar plantation. From the river you see the side those buildings were designed to be approached from.
How long is a Commewijne boat tour?
We state no duration of our own yet. Local operators publicly sell this as a full day, leaving Leonsberg around 09:00 and starting back in the afternoon (checked September 2026). Once our departure time is fixed, the figure goes here.
How is this different from your Commewijne plantation tour?
The Commewijne plantation tour is a set tour with a published price, seven hours at €95 per person, taking in Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Peperpot. This boat tour we organise on request: availability, timing and final arrangements are confirmed with you before booking.
Can I book this boat tour now?
Not in one click yet. Switi Tours organises this experience on request. Request your date by WhatsApp or through the form and we will check available shared or private departures, with the price confirmed when availability is checked.
Can a solo traveller join the boat?
Ask us. For a request for 1 person we check whether a shared departure is leaving Leonsberg that day that you can join, or whether a private boat is feasible. We do not say in advance that it will work; you get an honest answer within 24 hours.
What do children pay?
Every child has their own seat and, on the water, their own life jacket, never a lap. Children under 3 come free, from 3 to 11 20% off the adult price. Tell us the ages when you enquire; we confirm in advance whether a child seat is available.
