A plantation that became forest again, with flat tracks and sloths overhead.
Peperpot Nature Park: sloths and cacao trees eight kilometres from Paramaribo
Peperpot sits eight kilometres from the centre of Paramaribo, just over the Jules Wijdenbosch bridge in Commewijne. It is a former coffee and cacao plantation given back to the forest, and one of the most reliable places in Suriname for three-toed sloths. New departure dates are being arranged. Request your date and we will check available shared or private departures; the price is confirmed when availability is checked.
Status: Switi Tours organises this experience on request. Availability, timing and final arrangements are confirmed with you before booking.
Peperpot produced coffee and later cacao well into the twentieth century. When the business ended the land was not redeveloped but left to the forest, with the old plantation tracks still running straight through it. That gives you broad, level paths with no climbing, cacao trees and cecropias on both sides.
It is in those cecropias that the three-toed sloths sit. Troops of squirrel monkeys and capuchins are often seen there too (according to KLM’s travel guide and visitor reports, checked October 2026), plus howler monkeys, toucans, several woodpecker species and with luck a giant anteater. We guarantee no animal at all. These are wild animals and there are mornings when you see very little.
Timing matters more than where you walk. From the 08:00 opening until about 10:00 is by far the most active window; after that it turns hot and quiet. Arrive at eleven and you walk the same forest and see a fraction of it.
What that means for you: this is a request page, not a booking page. There are no fixed departure days yet. Send your date and how many people you are, we check what is possible that morning, and you get a personal answer with the price and the format. If you are travelling alone we check whether there is a shared departure you can join or whether a private trip is feasible. We promise neither in advance.
The park charges its own entry on the gate. What that amount is, and whether it sits inside our proposal, is stated in the confirmation; we will not print a figure here that we have not checked ourselves.

This is for you if…
Anyone who wants to see sloths and howler monkeys without a day of travel, people who are unsteady on their feet but still want to be in forest, and early risers who are out by 07:00.
Do not book this if…
Not for anyone who only gets going after ten in the morning: between the 08:00 opening and 10:00 you see by far the most. Not for anyone who wants guaranteed wildlife, and not for anyone who cannot tolerate mosquitoes in forest.
What you meet along the way
Frequently asked questions
Can you see sloths at Peperpot?
Regularly, yes; guaranteed, no. Peperpot Nature Park is one of the most reliable places in Suriname for three-toed sloths, usually in the cecropia trees along the main tracks. Straight after the 08:00 opening gives the best odds.
How far is Peperpot from Paramaribo?
About 8 kilometres, just over the Jules Wijdenbosch bridge in Commewijne district, roughly fifteen minutes by car. That makes it the closest real forest destination to Paramaribo.
Is the walk at Peperpot difficult?
No. You walk the old plantation tracks: broad, level and with no climbing, cacao trees and cecropias on both sides. It is hot and humid, so bring more water than you think you need.
What does a Peperpot excursion with Switi Tours cost?
We publish no price while the format is unconfirmed, and the park charges its own entry as well. Request your date and we confirm the price when availability is checked, and tell you then whether entry is included.
Can a solo traveller join a Peperpot trip?
Ask us. For a request for 1 person we check whether a shared departure into Commewijne is running that morning that you can join, or whether a private trip is feasible. We do not promise it in advance; you get an answer within 24 hours.
What do children pay?
Every child has their own seat and, on the water, their own life jacket, never a lap. Children under 3 come free, from 3 to 11 20% off the adult price. Tell us the ages when you enquire; we confirm in advance whether a child seat is available.
