Can I book a Suriname tour if I am traveling alone?

Yes. You can enquire about any tour as a solo traveller. The minimum group to run varies by tour, usually three or four, sometimes two. For selected excursions we may place you on an existing departure, and otherwise we quote a private one. Whether it works depends on the tour and the date: send your date and you get a personal reply within 24 hours.

Can I book a Suriname tour if I am traveling alone?
Your situation What to ask for Time Why The honest catch
Solo, flexible dates The historic centre walk (€40) or the food tour (€55), and name your whole date range 3 to 4 hours The more dates you leave open, the better the chance that one of them already has a departure you can join. We cannot say in advance which date it will be. You get an answer per date, not a standing guarantee.
Solo, one fixed date Send that single date and ask about an existing departure and a private quote in the same message Reply within 24 hours With one date there is only one thing to check, so both options can be answered together. If nothing is running that day, a private departure is the only route left, and it costs more than the listed per-person price.
Solo, wants private Ask for a private quote for the tour you want, for example Commewijne (listed at €95 per person) 3 hours to a full day A private departure runs at your pace, with your questions, and does not depend on who else books. Quoted, not published. The listed price assumes at least 2 people, so alone the total is higher.
Solo, only the evening free Blauwgrond by night, €55 3 hours Warungs run on shared tables, so sitting down alone is the ordinary way to eat there. Evenings only, and joining still depends on the date. Almost everything served contains peanut sauce.
Solo, one full day spare Commewijne: plantations and river, €95 7 hours The biggest set day trip out of the city that we organise, with plantation history told on the ground. Full days hang on a departure time with a boat and a vehicle. If that departure is not running, it becomes a quote.
Solo, and it is a Sunday Sunday Morning in Paramaribo, €55 4 hours It only runs on Sundays, so the question of which date answers itself and other guests concentrate on the same morning. It starts before 07:00 and the songbird contest is over by nine. Sundays only, so there is no fallback day that week.

Which excursions are easiest to join alone

The city tours are the natural fit. The historic centre walk (3 hours, €40) and the food tour (4 hours, €55) are walking tours around street stalls and shared tables. One person more or less changes nothing about how the day runs, and you end up in conversation with the guide and with the people behind the counter.

Blauwgrond by night (3 hours, €55) is the same idea after dark: four warungs, shared tables, no menus. For anyone who would rather not sit alone with a menu in a restaurant, it is the easiest evening in the city.

Full days out of the city work differently. Commewijne (7 hours, €95) involves a boat, a vehicle and a fixed departure time, so joining alone depends on a departure already existing on your date. That is a question we answer per date, not a rule we can state in advance.

The cooking class (5 hours, €75) caps at six people and starts with a shopping list bought that same morning, so a place for one person is checked case by case. Two river excursions, the sunset and dolphin trip and the Commewijne boat trip, are organised on request and their dates are being fixed now. Ask about them and you will be told what exists, not what we hope will exist.

What a shared departure actually means

A shared or existing departure is a date on which other guests have already booked the same tour and there is still room inside the cap of 8 people. You join them and pay the same per-person price printed on the tour page.

We do not promise that such a departure exists on any given date, and we will not pretend one does. Switi is a small tour organiser with no daily fixed schedule, so there is no seat sitting there waiting for you. What we can do is check your date against the bookings that exist and, for selected excursions, against departures already scheduled.

If there is room, you are on it. If there is not, we say so, and two honest options remain: another date, or a private departure with a quote attached.

The private option, and why it is quoted rather than listed

Every price on this site is per person and assumes the group minimum of 2. Taking a guide out for an afternoon, and for some tours a vehicle or a boat as well, costs the same whether one person or four is standing there. A private departure for one traveller therefore does not cost the listed per-person price, and we will not print a number we have not worked out.

Where it is operationally feasible we will quote it. A city walk or food tour is the easiest case, a full day with a boat and a driver the hardest. You get one total before you commit to anything; the 20% deposit only comes into it once you say yes, and you can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the start.

How far ahead to ask

There is no cut-off, but more notice simply raises the chance that a departure already exists for you to join. One to two weeks before your date is comfortable: bookings for that week are often in by then, and there is still room to arrange a private alternative if nothing lines up.

Same-week and same-day enquiries are answered just as fully, they just end in a private quote or another date more often. If your dates are not fixed yet, send the whole range rather than waiting until you have picked one day. Either way you get a personal reply within 24 hours.

Exactly what to send

Your date, or your date range. One fixed day, or "somewhere between 3 and 9 March", both are fine, but say which.

Which tours interest you, ideally in order of preference. With two or three names there is something to shuffle; with one name and one date there is not.

How flexible you are. Tied to that one afternoon, or any day that week? That is the difference between one check and seven.

Which area your hotel or apartment is in. Meeting points differ per tour, and it decides whether a pick-up is practical.

Whether a private departure is an option for you if no shared one exists. If it is, the quote comes with the first reply instead of after another round of messages.

Shared, private or solo: the difference in three lines

Shared departure: other guests are on the same tour on the same date, you join them, you pay the listed per-person price.

Private departure: the tour runs for you alone, quoted on request as one total before you commit.

Solo traveller: that is how you are travelling, not a separate product. You can be a solo traveller on a shared departure, which is the ordinary case, or on a private one.

Practical reading before you arrive alone

The things below stay on the practical pages on purpose, because those carry the date on which they were last checked. Reading them is more reliable than trusting a summary here.

Safety: our page on it was last checked on 2026-08-18 and points at your own government’s travel advice, which changes more often than our text does.

Your first 24 hours: eSIM, cash and arrival timing are exactly the things nobody else has arranged for you when you travel alone.

Airport to Paramaribo: 45 kilometres, about an hour, and a private transfer runs €50 to €60. Travelling alone you split that with nobody, so budget for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the minimum of 2 people rule me out as a solo traveller?

No. The published minimum (usually three or four people, two on some tours) describes the group the per-person price is built for, not who may enquire. For selected excursions we may be able to place you on an existing or shared departure, and otherwise we quote a private departure where it is feasible. What is possible on your date is checked per date, and you hear back within 24 hours.

Do I pay a single supplement?

There is no published single supplement. Join an existing departure and you pay the listed price, for example €40 for the historic centre walk or €55 for the food tour. A private departure for you alone is quoted as one total, because the listed price assumes at least 2 people. You see that total before you commit to anything.

Which tour is easiest to join on my own?

The 3-hour historic centre walk (€40), the 4-hour food tour (€55) and the 3-hour Blauwgrond by night (€55). All three are walking tours around shared tables and street stalls, where one extra person changes nothing. Full days such as Commewijne (7 hours, €95) hang on a departure time and are therefore date-dependent.

How far ahead should I ask?

One to two weeks ahead is comfortable, because a departure you can join more often already exists by then. Later is fine too: every enquiry gets an answer within 24 hours, short-notice ones just end in a private quote more often. Once confirmed, a 20% deposit reserves your place and you can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the start.

What should I sort out arriving alone in Paramaribo?

Read our page on your first 24 hours and the safety page, last checked on 2026-08-18. For the ride from JAP airport into the city, count on 45 kilometres, about an hour, and €50 to €60 for a private transfer that you are splitting with nobody as a solo traveller.
