Choosing

What are the best tours from Paramaribo?

For a first visit the Paramaribo food tour is the strongest single choice: four hours, €55, six to eight tastings inside three kilometres. Choose the historic centre walk (three hours, €40) if you came for the buildings, Commewijne (seven hours, €95) for plantation history reached by boat, and Brownsberg (eleven hours, €125) only if four hours in a vehicle is acceptable.

What are the best tours from Paramaribo?
What you want Best fit Time Why The catch
One tour, and the right one Paramaribo food tour, €55 4 hours, from 09:00 Six to eight tastings from the Central Market via the street to a Hindustani roti shop, at the hour of the day when the market is at its fullest. Fixed 09:00 start, Monday to Saturday, and a couple of kilometres on foot in the morning heat. Not for cautious eaters, and you have to arrive hungry.
Food, but the food tour is done Blauwgrond by Night, €55 3 hours, evening Four warungs in the Javanese neighbourhood, shared tables, saoto, satay, petjil and dawet, and no menus anywhere. Most warungs are half open-air, so the mosquitoes join you at the table. And peanut sauce is in nearly everything.
The history of the city Historic centre walking tour, €40 3 hours Fort Zeelandia, the Palm Garden, the synagogue beside the mosque and the Waterkant, in a group capped at eight. 2.5 kilometres in afternoon sun. December 1982 and the slavery history are on the route, not in a footnote.
Wildlife close to the city Peperpot Nature Park (being arranged) Half day, typically A former coffee and cacao plantation eight kilometres from the centre, given back to the forest. Sloths are the usual sighting. Dates being arranged, price confirmed with availability. No animal is guaranteed: sloths are likely, howler monkeys and toucans are luck.
Families with children Colakreek day trip, €85 8 hours Swimming in clear blackwater over white savannah sand about 50 kilometres from the city, with lunch and hammocks. Not a wildlife day: birds and maybe a caiman, no monkeys or sloths. At weekends it fills with Surinamese families and music.
The best half day Sunset and dolphins (being arranged) Late afternoon into the evening Downstream to the river mouth where Guiana dolphins feed, then the light going over the water on the way back. Dates being arranged, price confirmed with availability. Dolphins are wild and we guarantee no sighting, and heavy rain moves the trip.
The best full day Commewijne plantations and river, €95 7 hours, 08:00 to about 15:30 Boat across the river, Fort Nieuw Amsterdam from 1747, the cells at Frederiksdorp, lunch by the water, then the sloths of Peperpot. Seven hours, part of it in full sun, in an open boat. Slavery and indenture are the substance of the day, not a footnote.
Only one free day The food tour in the morning and the walking tour at 16:00, €95 together 4 hours plus 3 hours, with the midday heat in between One day is not enough for the city and the interior, so take the city. The food tour does the market and the roti shop in the morning, the walk does the wooden centre as the sun goes down. If your free day is a Sunday the Central Market is closed and the food tour does not run. Take Sunday Morning (€55) and Blauwgrond by Night (€55) instead.
No rental car Any of our tours: transport is included or not needed Varies City tours are walked, and the day trips include the vehicle, the boat and a pick-up at your hotel in Paramaribo. Pick-ups are in Paramaribo only. And Brownsberg is still four hours in a vehicle; your own car would not shorten it.
Jodensavanne, the World Heritage site Jenny Tours, €82.50, bookable today. Our own day trip is being arranged Full day, typically They have published a price for it for years and run it as a fixed product. Jodensavanne was inscribed on the World Heritage list on 19 September 2023. Ours has dates being arranged and a price confirmed with availability, so for a fixed date now, theirs is the better booking.
More than a day in the interior SUforYou, multi-day interior trips from €285 Two days and up Fredberg, Palumeu and Kabalebo are their product, with fixed group departures. We run day trips and tailor-made family travel, not expeditions. Their day tour prices are often quoted per group rather than per person, which makes them awkward to compare with ours.

Best overall: the food tour

If you take one tour in Paramaribo, take this one. Four hours, €55, six to eight tastings, and the route runs from the Central Market with the Vreedzaammarkt beside it, via the street, to a Hindustani roti shop where lunch is turned on the tawa. It is also the tour that explains the rest of the country: who arrived when, and what they cooked once they were here.

The start is fixed at 09:00, Monday to Saturday, because that is when the market is at its fullest and by noon the best of it has gone. Come hungry. The tastings add up to a full lunch, and people who have a big breakfast first do not reach the roti shop. The saoto and the warungs of Blauwgrond only open around 18:00, which is why they have their own evening tour.

Best for food once the food tour is done

Blauwgrond by Night is the second helping: €55, three hours, four warungs in the Javanese neighbourhood in the north of the city, at shared tables with the sambal within reach. Saoto, satay, petjil and dawet, and no menus.

The cooking class goes the other way. €75, five hours, six people maximum: you pick out the pomtayer yourself at the Central Market and eat what you made five hours later, with the recipes written for a Dutch supermarket. That one is for people who genuinely intend to cook it at home, not for people who want to watch.

Best for history

The historic centre walk is €40 for three hours, with the group capped at eight. Fort Zeelandia, the Palm Garden, the synagogue that shares a plot with a mosque, and the Waterkant as the light turns. It is 2.5 kilometres on foot.

It is not a light sightseeing loop. December 1982 and the slavery history are on the route rather than in a footnote. If it is your own family you are after, the roots day at €145 is the right page instead, and Roots Plus at €195 adds research before you land and a written dossier afterwards.

Best for wildlife

Peperpot has the highest hit rate near the city: a former coffee and cacao plantation eight kilometres from the centre, handed back to the forest, where sloths are the standard sighting and howler monkeys, toucans or an anteater are the good days. We are arranging our own Peperpot half day now, with dates and price confirmed alongside availability.

Peperpot is already the afternoon of the €95 Commewijne day, so if you want the animals and the history in one go, book that instead. Brownsberg at €125 is the bigger nature day, but it costs you eleven hours.

Best for families

Colakreek: €85, eight hours, about 50 kilometres from the city in Para district. Clear red-brown blackwater over white savannah sand, hammocks, lunch, and children who are in the water ten minutes after arriving.

It is not a wildlife day. Birds and perhaps a caiman, no monkeys and no sloths. At weekends it fills with Surinamese families and music, which is either the point or the problem depending on what you came for; midweek it is quiet. Travelling with three generations at once, the tailor-made family day is priced on request rather than published, because the shape of it changes with the family.

Best half day

A sunset and dolphin trip is the strongest half day on the river: downstream to the mouth where Guiana dolphins feed, then the light going over the water on the way back. We are arranging dates now and will confirm the price with availability.

Two honest warnings. The dolphins are wild, so nobody can promise you a sighting, and anyone who does is selling you something they do not control. And the trip runs on the light, so the meeting time moves through the year and a heavy shower moves the boat.

Best full day

Commewijne, €95, seven hours, 08:00 to roughly 15:30. You cross the Suriname River by boat, which is the only way the Waterkant still looks the way it was built to look, then Fort Nieuw Amsterdam from 1747, then Frederiksdorp, where the director’s house, the police post and the cells still stand within sight of each other.

Lunch is by the river and the afternoon is Peperpot. Boat, entries and lunch are in the price. It is a long day, part of it in full sun, and the subject is slavery and indenture rather than a pleasant outing.

If you only have one free day

One day is not enough for the city and the interior, so take the city. The food tour does the market, the street and the roti shop in the morning, 09:00 to 13:00, and leaves your afternoon free.

The two city tours stack in one day: the food tour in the morning, the midday heat in your hotel, and the walking tour at 16:00 until sunset on the Waterkant. Together that is €95 and seven hours on the street. If your free day is a Sunday the market is closed and the food tour does not run; take Sunday Morning (€55) and Blauwgrond by Night (€55) in the evening instead.

Without a rental car

You do not need one. City tours are walked and the food tour stays in the centre. Blauwgrond by Night includes return transport from the centre in its price, and every day trip out of Paramaribo includes the vehicle, the boat where there is one, and a pick-up at your hotel in the city.

What a car would not fix: Brownsberg is still four hours of driving over partly unpaved road, and Colakreek is still an hour each way. Renting does not shorten Suriname, it only puts you behind the wheel of it.

How to choose

Three questions settle it. How much time do you actually have on that date, how far out of the city are you willing to go, and is the point of the day food, history, water or animals?

Then take the catch seriously. The eleven-hour day really is eleven hours. The plantation day really is about slavery. The food tour really does need an empty stomach. Every row in the table above has a limitation column because every one of these days costs you something, and the tour your neighbour recommends can be the wrong one for you.

And where somebody else does it better, we say so. Jodensavanne is a Jenny Tours booking today at €82.50, and multi-day interior travel is SUforYou territory from €285. We would rather lose that booking than sell you a worse version of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tour in Paramaribo for a first visit?

The food tour: €55, four hours, six to eight tastings, with a fixed 09:00 start Monday to Saturday. It runs from the Central Market via the street to a Hindustani roti shop for lunch, and explains along the way who cooks what in Suriname and why.

What does a tour from Paramaribo cost?

Ours run from €40 (the three-hour walking tour) to €125 (Brownsberg, eleven hours). Booking local and direct is in the same range: Jenny Tours charges €125 for Brownsberg and €82.50 for Jodensavanne. On Viator a Paramaribo City Tour starts at $163 and a Brownsberg day trip costs $233.

Which tour works with children?

Colakreek, €85 for eight hours, with swimming, hammocks and lunch. Brownsberg explicitly does not: eleven hours, four of them in a vehicle over partly unpaved road, and not suitable for small children or anyone with back or knee trouble.

Can you do these tours without a car?

Yes. The walking tour and the food tour are on foot and stay in the centre. Blauwgrond by Night (€55) includes return transport, and Commewijne (€95), Colakreek (€85) and Brownsberg (€125) all include transport and a pick-up in Paramaribo.

Does the day of the week change what you should book?

Yes. The Central Market is closed on Sundays, so the food tour runs Monday to Saturday. Sunday Morning in Paramaribo (€55) only runs on Sunday: the songbird contest starts around 07:00 and is finished before nine, and after that the tour does not exist.
