What is the best boat tour from Paramaribo?

Boat trips here mean three different things. The Commewijne river tour crosses to the plantations, a sunset trip goes downstream to the estuary where the dolphins are, and the combination does both in one day. Our full plantation day, seven hours at €95, includes the crossing. The dedicated boat trips are being arranged now, with dates and price confirmed alongside availability.

What is the best boat tour from Paramaribo?
What you want Best fit Time Why The catch
The whole plantation story, boat included Commewijne plantations and river, €95 7 hours, boat at 08:30 The crossing is the opening, not the whole product: Fort Nieuw Amsterdam from 1747, the cells at Frederiksdorp and Peperpot belong to it. Seven hours, part of it in full sun, in an open boat. The day is about slavery and indenture, not about the view.
Just the river and the far bank Commewijne boat trip (being arranged) Half day, typically For people who want the river without the seven-hour programme: the city seen from the water, and the Commewijne bank. Dates being arranged, price confirmed with availability. A shorter trip means fewer stops than the €75 day.
Dolphins and the light on the water Sunset and dolphins (being arranged) Late afternoon into the evening Downstream to the river mouth where Guiana dolphins feed, and back while the sun drops. Dates being arranged, price confirmed with availability. Dolphins are wild: no guarantee, and heavy rain moves or cancels the trip.
Both, in one day Commewijne with dolphins (being arranged) Full day, typically The plantation side during the day and the river mouth late in the afternoon, without going back to the jetty twice. Dates being arranged, price confirmed with availability. It is a long day on the water and the dolphin leg still carries no guarantee.
A fixed price you can book today Jenny Tours, Commewijne with dolphins, €70 Full day A published price, years in the market as a fixed product, and bookable on a date that is already certain. They publish no maximum group size, so you do not know how many people are in the boat until you are in it.
Travelling alone Ask first: a shared departure needs other bookings on the same date Depends on the trip A boat costs the same with one passenger as with eight, so a solo date either joins an existing departure or becomes a private trip. On a quiet date there may be no departure to join, and private costs more per person. We say which it is before you pay anything.

What a boat tour here actually is

In Paramaribo the phrase covers three different days. One: the crossing of the Suriname River to Commewijne, where the plantations are. Two: downstream to the river mouth late in the afternoon, where Guiana dolphins feed and the sun drops over the water. Three: both, back to back, as one long day.

What it is not: a cruise with a deck and a bar. These are open boats. You sit in the sun, in the wind and sometimes in a shower, and that is exactly why the city looks the way it was meant to from the water.

Commewijne by boat

The full plantation day is €95 and runs seven hours. Pick-up at 08:00, the boat at 08:30, and you are at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam by 09:15. On the way you see the Waterkant from the water, and with luck there are dolphins in the river mouth; that is not a guarantee and we do not pretend otherwise.

If you want the river without the whole programme, the standalone Commewijne boat trip is being arranged. Dates are being organised and the price is confirmed with availability. Expect fewer stops than the €75 day, because that is precisely the difference.

Sunset and dolphins

This is the strongest half day on the water: leave late in the afternoon, run downstream to the mouth where the Suriname River meets the ocean, and come back while the light turns. The dolphins are Guiana dolphins, the same species our Commewijne day mentions.

We are arranging dates now and will confirm the price with availability. What we will not do is promise you a sighting. Anyone who does is selling you something they do not control.

Both in one day

The combination, plantations during the day and the river mouth late in the afternoon, is the fullest day on the water available here. It is also being arranged, with dates being organised and a price confirmed alongside availability.

Do weigh what a full day of sun and wind does to you. Someone already seven hours into a day out is often mostly tired by the time the dolphins turn up.

Sunset timing, and why the meeting time moves

Paramaribo sits at 5.8 degrees north, close to the equator. Day length therefore barely changes, and the sun sets within about half an hour of the same time all year, in the early evening.

So the departure time of a sunset trip shifts a little by season rather than being unpredictable. We give you the exact time once the date is fixed, and we set it by the light rather than by a timetable.

Weather: what rain actually does to a boat trip

The main rainy season here runs from late April to mid-August, the shorter one from early December to early February. Rain in Suriname usually means a short, heavy shower, often late in the afternoon, rather than a grey day. You plan around it, you do not cancel for it.

On the water it is a little different from on land. An open boat in a hard shower is not a pleasant place, so a trip is more likely to shift by an hour than to push through the rain. In a thunderstorm it does not go, and that is not a negotiation.

No wildlife guarantee, and why we say so

It is already in the text of the Commewijne day: with luck there are Guiana dolphins in the river mouth, and that is not a guarantee. The same applies just as hard to a trip built around the dolphins.

There is one place nearby with a genuinely high hit rate, and that is Peperpot, where you almost always see sloths. Nothing is guaranteed there either, but the difference in odds is worth saying out loud. If you want certainty about animals, choose forest over water.

Shared, private or solo

A boat costs the same with one passenger as with eight. A shared departure is therefore cheaper per person, but it needs other bookings on the same date. If there are none, it becomes a private trip at a different price.

So travelling alone is possible, but ask first. We tell you which of the two your date is before you pay anything, rather than letting you find out afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see dolphins near Paramaribo?

Guiana dolphins feed in the mouth of the Suriname River. They are wild animals: our €95 Commewijne day states plainly that a sighting is not guaranteed, and the same holds for a dedicated dolphin trip. Anyone guaranteeing one is promising something they do not control.

What time does the sun set in Paramaribo?

Paramaribo lies at 5.8 degrees north, so day length barely changes and the sun sets within about half an hour of the same time all year, in the early evening. We give the exact departure time for a sunset trip once the date is fixed.

Can a boat tour run in the rainy season?

Usually yes. The main rainy season runs from late April to mid-August, and rain here is normally a short heavy shower late in the afternoon rather than a grey day. The €95 Commewijne day still sails at 08:30 in it, and a trip is more likely to shift by an hour. In a thunderstorm it does not go.

How long is the boat crossing to Commewijne?

On the €95 day the boat leaves the jetty at 08:30 and you are at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam by 09:15, the pentagonal fort from 1747 at the fork of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. The return is by road, with Peperpot in the afternoon.

Can you book a boat tour as a solo traveller?

Yes, but ask first. A boat costs the same with 1 passenger as with 8, so a solo date either joins an existing departure or becomes a private trip at a different price. On the €95 Commewijne day the departure is shared. We tell you which it is before you pay anything. Send your date and you get a personal reply within 24 hours saying whether a shared departure exists or what a private boat would cost.

Still not sure?

Send your date, your group size and what you enjoy. You get a personal reply within 24 hours with honest advice, even when that points to another operator.
