Three things decide your first 24 hours in Suriname: internet, cash and timing. Activate an eSIM before landing (from $6.50), withdraw at Republic Bank or exchange at a city-centre cambio, and expect hotel check-in from 15:00.

Internet first, because everything else here runs on WhatsApp. The Telesur desk at the airport keeps roughly 09:00 to 17:00 hours and is closed for late arrivals. The stress-free route: activate a travel eSIM before departure (Airalo sells 1 GB for 3 days at $6.50) and pick up a local SIM in town at leisure. Telesur sells 25 GB for 7 days at SRD 317, under $9, registered against your passport. Per gigabyte that is many times cheaper than any travel eSIM.
Then money. Do not count on the airport: its ATM is unreliable and no money changer is open after midnight. In town, the blue Republic Bank ATMs are the reliable choice for foreign cards, with a limit of SRD 20,000 per day (usually as two withdrawals of SRD 10,000). Since 1 August 2026 a withdrawal at BNETS machines costs SRD 17.60. Exchange at a cambio in the centre (Wilhelminastraat, Domineestraat, Waterkant); euros and dollars change readily, and Surinamese ATMs dispense SRD only.
Timing: standard check-in at the larger hotels (Courtyard, Royal Torarica, Ramada) is 15:00, check-out 12:00. The KLM lands early to mid afternoon, so by the time you clear immigration and the hour-long drive, your room is essentially ready. Arriving early? The larger hotels store luggage.
Groceries work on night one: Tulip Supermarket (Tourtonnelaan 132 and Verlengde Gemenelandsweg 118) is open 08:00 to 20:00 every day including Sundays and public holidays, with a drugstore section for repellent, sunscreen and baby supplies.
