You live in Paramaribo and someone is visiting. The shape that works: half a day is the historic centre on foot, a full day is one direction out of town (Commewijne, Colakreek or Brownsberg), and a weekend adds the Sunday markets and an evening in Blauwgrond. The morning is the scarce resource.

Living here teaches you the city as a place to live, not as a place to show. Those are different skills: guests want a story inside a fixed number of hours. The one planning rule that decides everything is that the morning is the resource. The Central Market is fullest between 07:00 and 11:00, the Surinaams Museum at Fort Zeelandia closes at 14:00 on weekdays, and the Sunday markets empty out around 10:00. Start at eleven and half the programme is already gone.
Half a day, three to four hours: the centre on foot. Independence Square to the cathedral is about a kilometre, so everything is walkable. Fort Zeelandia with the Surinaams Museum (Tue-Fri 9:00-14:00, Sun 10:00-14:00), the Palmentuin, the Waterkant, and the Neveh Shalom synagogue beside the mosque on Keizerstraat. On a weekday morning, open with the Central Market and the Vreedzaammarkt attached to it, and warn your guests in advance that photography is not welcome there.
A full day: pick one direction, never two. Commewijne across the river is the comfortable choice (Fort Nieuw Amsterdam and Peperpot, back by mid afternoon), Colakreek is the choice when someone wants to swim, and Brownsberg with the Brokopondo reservoir is the big one: 2 to 2.5 hours of driving each way, a four-wheel drive and a start in the dark.
A weekend: Saturday for the city and the Blauwgrond warungs in the evening, Sunday for the markets. The Central Market is closed on Sunday, but that is exactly when Kong Ngie Tong Sang by the Palmentuin and Soeng Ngie in the north run, along with the Javanese Saoenah market, the De Tuin orchid market, the organic market at Clevia Park and the Kwatta market. All morning affairs. If you want a night out of town, Frederiksdorp in Commewijne has rooms.

What do you do with visitors in the evening?
The Blauwgrond warungs are the city’s own answer: Javanese food, four kilometres from the centre, so take a taxi rather than walking. Our evening tour there starts at 18:30, runs 3 hours and costs €39 per person.
