Business events in Paramaribo: SEOGS and what to do around it

Suriname’s business events calendar has one anchor: the Suriname Energy, Oil and Gas Summit, hosted by Staatsolie, held each June in Paramaribo. The growth is well documented: 800 delegates and 150 exhibitors in 2023, 900 delegates and 200 exhibitors in 2024, over 1,000 delegates (including 300-plus VIPs) and 250 exhibitors in 2025, and over 1,200 delegates with 260-plus exhibitors expected in 2026, from more than 40 countries. The visitor numbers run far higher (7,000 in 2023, 14,000-plus expected in 2026) but those are overwhelmingly local trade visitors. Scale it honestly: across three years that is roughly 400 extra international visitors, concentrated in a single week each year. It is a genuine spike in that week and not a change in the travel year. The practical consequence if you are attending: book your hotel room and your airport transfer earlier than you would in any other month, because the city has little slack that week.

A free evening. The centre is walkable, about a kilometre from Independence Square to the cathedral, with Fort Zeelandia and the Waterkant on the way. Dinner belongs at the Blauwgrond warungs, four kilometres out of the centre, so take a taxi; our evening tour there starts at 18:30, runs 3 hours and costs €39 per person. If you have a free afternoon rather than an evening, the cooking class runs 5 hours at €55 and starts at the market.

A spare day either side. June falls inside the long rainy season (late April to early August), but a shower usually lasts under an hour, so a day outdoors is normally fine. Three options: Commewijne with Fort Nieuw Amsterdam and Peperpot (€75, 7 hours), Colakreek for swimming (€60, 8 hours), and Brownsberg with the Brokopondo reservoir (€95, 11 hours), the last of which means 2 to 2.5 hours of driving each way and is the hardest to wedge between two conference days. If your spare day falls on a Sunday, the Central Market is closed and the Sunday markets run instead, emptying out around 10:00.

Beyond SEOGS: there is no published business events calendar for Paramaribo with attendance figures we would reproduce, and SEOGS is the only recurring event whose numbers are public. Capacity is growing, though: Radisson Paramaribo opened with 126 rooms on 23 October 2025 and Torarica delivers 116 long-stay apartments in 2026-2027.
